DRAMATIC ROLES: There's nothing like a good dramatic role, especially if the part is big enough for a good character arc. Each role has its own rhythm of delivery and style of performance. I used to play almost exclusively bad guys, but now that I'm older, the range is broader. SUBTLE COMEDY: This kind of performance demands a delicate hand. It's played straight, but the timing is carefully choreographed for, if not laughs, at least for ironic smiles. I really enjoy this kind of subtle play. BROAD COMEDY: I've found that the various styles of broader comedy on television are the closest techniques to the stage. One odd difference is that on stage the audience responds with laughter immediately (this happens with live tapings before a studio audience as well, of course), while often when a very funny scene is filmed on set, there's no sound from the crew until "cut," whereupon cast and crew can let the laughter out.
